PLACENTIA, Calif. (AP) - Orange County authorities have begun detonating explosives found in a drainage channel underneath a street in Placentia.
County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says six grenades, explosive powders, blasting caps, fuses and other items were found Monday morning in and around a backpack.
Amormino says it appears the explosives were intentionally gathered in the channel underneath Lakeview Avenue but the motive is not known.
The FBI has joined the investigation, which has forced the evacuation of nearby businesses.
A bomb squad placed the grenades inside a special vessel and detonated them.
Amormino says a larger, open vessel will be used to detonate the explosive powders, which are expected to produce a much larger blast.
Placentia is a city of more than 50,000 residents about 25 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
