The Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable honored two league champions on Monday.
Righetti High swimmer Devon Tomooka received Male Athlete of the Week. The junior won the 50 yard freestyle (22.04 seconds), finished second in the 100 freestyle (48.24) and swam legs on two relay teams that set meet records during last week's PAC 7 League Championships. All four times in the events were automatic qualifiers for the CIF Division II Prelims. "It's a tough sport and you have to keep pushing through but the results are worth it at the end of the season when you get to swim and see how you've been doing the whole season," said Tomooka. He also thanked his teammates for helping push him each and every day of practice.
Cabrillo High's Rebecka Miranda received Female Athlete of the Week. The junior won the 100 meter dash (12.85 seconds), the 200 meter dash (26.66 seconds), the long jump (17 feet, 4.5 inches) and the triple jump (37 feet, 6 inches) at the Los Padres League Track and Field Championships last week. Miranda set new personal bests in three of those events.
"My plan overall is to make it to the State Meet. But each meet I want to qualify and qualify. And if I make it to State, I want to be able to hit my best jump," said Miranda, who was an All-CIF soccer player for the Los Padres League champion Cabrillo soccer team.
The CIF prelims for both track and swimming are later this week.
