Fair organizers hope to break attendance record

The Santa Barbara County Fair kicked off today in Santa Maria.

Fair organizers expect thousands of people to walk through the gates during the five-day event.

It's the 122nd Santa Barbara County Fair and this year fair goers are celebrating "Memories, Music and Magic."

Last year, the fair had its highest attendance with 161,000 people.

This annual event has a reputation of attracting big crowds and bringing in big money to the community.

It's one of the most popular events for the Santa Maria Fairpark, attracting thousands of people every year.

"Each year we work very hard to bring new and exciting entertainment and new and exciting rides," said Santa Maria Fairpark public relations representative Yvonne Biely.

Biely says the fair attracts fairgoers from across the Central Coast and benefits the local economy.

"They stay in our local hotels, gas up in our gas stations and they go to the grocery store and buy food," said Biely.

Janel Armet is one of more than 150 vendors set up at the Fairpark.

She's ready for a big crowd.

"I paint people's faces from Santa Barbara up to Paso," said Armet.

Armet says she always gets her regular customers, but looks forward to a new year with new faces.
