Family and friends gathered on Friday to honor the 17-year-old boy killed by a train in San Luis Obispo last week.

Oscar Gonzalez was crossing the tracks near California Boulevard when an Amtrak train hit him.

Mission San Luis Obispo was packed as those close to him said their final goodbyes. His burial at Old Mission Cemetery was followed by a gathering at his favorite skate park in Santa Rosa Park.

Friends say it was only fitting to honor him there.

"It would just be respectful to have it here...," said Matt Harrington, a friend of Oscar's. "This is like almost his home too. He was always skating here."

Skate boarding was life for Oscar; he was leaving the skate park last week to go to a friend's house when he crossed paths with an oncoming train.

"He lived his life to the fullest every day and touched everyone's life that he entered," said Joseph Clay, a friend of Oscar's. "Everyone that knew him, he just affected."

Oscar often served as an older brother figure for the younger kids at the skate park.

"He was just a great person overall," Clay said. "There wasn't a bad thing about that kid."

Oscar once handed out a hundred or so 'Oscar-Approved' stickers.

Many of his mourners wore shirts and carried flags that said 'Oscar-Approved'.

Donations can be made to Oscar's family at any Rabobank, under the Oscar Gonzalez Benefit Account.
