Former Cal Poly point guard Amaurys Fermin has signed with a professional basketball team in his native Dominican Republic. Fermin signed a deal with San Pedro de Macoris, terms of the deal were not disclosed. San Pedro de Macoris competes in the eight-club Liga Dominicana de Baloncesto. The team finished as league runners-up last year.
Fermin started 33 games last winter in his one season with Cal Poly. He led the Big West Conference with 119 assists while guiding the Mustangs to an 18-15 record. The 18 wins were the program's second-highest victory total in 18 Division-1 seasons.
Fermin was selected for the Dominican Republic Men's National Team in early June. He helped the country capture the gold medal at the CentroBasket championships, a biennial competition for national teams from Central America and the Caribbean. Fermin did not play for the national team at the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament. The Dominican Republic failed to qualify for the Olympics. Fermin will join up with the Dominican Republic for an exhibition game against the United States on Thursday in Las Vegas.
Fermin is scheduled to report back to San Pedro de Macoris on Friday ahead of the club's July 15 season opener.
Fermin holds dual citizenship, after being born in the Dominican Republic he moved to New York with his family when he was seven years old.
Fermin averaged 24.0 points per game as a senior at Kennedy High School in Bronx, New York and 17.5 points and 8.2 assists per contest as a sophomore at Hagerstwon (Md.) College. He missed the 2009-10 season after transferring to Cal Poly and the 2010-11 campaign after suffering an ACL injury.
