Arby Fields legged out an infield single with two outs to allow Robert Vickers to score the game-winning run as the Santa Barbara Foresters beat the Austin Gold Sox 2-1 on Wednesday at the NBC World Series in Wichita, Kansas.
Fields drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning for the defending national champion Foresters that tied the game 1-1.
The Foresters and Gold Sox had 3 hits apiece. Fields, Richard Sanguinetti and Austin Davidson had the other basehits for Santa Barbara.
Nick Palewicz started for the Foresters. The right-handed sophomore from the University of Washington threw 8 brilliant innings. He allowed 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and struck out 4. TJ McGreevey threw 1 scoreless inning of relief and earned the win. Hunter Lemke, a junior out of Texas State, threw a scoreless tenth for the save.
Santa Barbara, a three-time national champion, advances in the winners bracket to take on the Casa Grande Cotton Kings from Arizona on Friday.
The San Luis Obispo Blues, who shared the California Collegiate League title with the Foresters, also won their opener 6-5 on Tuesday. They play the Greeley Grays on Thursday at 3pm PDT.
