Fire erupts in Los Angeles high-rise

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Flames and smoke have subsided on the 11th floor of a residential high-rise on the west side of Los Angeles.

City fire officials say the blaze was reported at 11:43 a.m. Friday in one unit of the 25-story building on Wilshire Boulevard.

Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey says three people have been taken to hospitals and "a handful" of others are being assessed for non-life threatening injuries. Fire Department radio traffic indicates the building is still being searched.

More than 180 firefighters were dispatched. Flames and smoke died down after about a half hour.

Humphrey noted that some residents on upper floors remained in their apartments despite the fire alarm.

The address is at Barrington Plaza, a luxury residential complex with more than 470 units.
