Six local firefighters received some much-deserved appreciation Wednesday night.
The Santa Maria Elks Lodge marked 36 years of hosting its annual "Fire Fighters Appreciation Night."
The evening started with cocktail hour, followed by a traditional Santa Maria-style barbeque dinner.
The firefighters who got special recognition for their contributions were from six local and federal departments.
Santa Maria Fire Department Captain James Clayton tells KSBY, "I just try and work hard and do a good job, I don't do it for the glory or the awards or plaques. I just do it because I want to make the department better and the city better."
Firefighter Juan Martinez from Guadalupe also received an award.
During his acceptance speech he surprised his girlfriend with a proposal. Her answer was yes.
