Santa Barbara County Firefighters spent the late afternoon and evening fighting a 10 acre vegetation fire in the area of Highway 101 N at Refugio Road.
The fire started shortly before 4:30 this afternoon on the north side of 101 and west of Refugio Road. Temperatures at the time of the fire were in the mid 80's with little wind. The fire quickly grew from one acre initially to ten acres, burning under power lines. There was one structure threatened, but no evacuations were ordered.
Access to the fire was difficult because of limited roads in the area, and steep terrain. Two helicopters made numerous drops to slow the forward progress of the fire, while air tankers worked the flanks. The fire was contained at 7 pm. Firefighters will continue to be on scene for a few more hours mopping up the fire. There were no injuries. Traffic on Highway 101 was slowed in the area but remained open.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
