The first deadline has arrived for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to begin reducing the inmate population at all of its thirty-three adult prisons in the state.
In May of this year, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered California to reduce its prison population by 33,000 inmates. The prison realignment will be handled in six month intervals.
As of December 27, the CDCR was expected to reduce populations to 167 percent of design capacity, or 133,000 inmates. The CDCR has until January tenth to submit its population report, but as of December 21, state prisons still needed to release another 15,000 inmates to meet that goal.
The next deadline is June 27, 2012. Prison populations must be at 155 percent design capacity. On December 27, 2012, populations must be at 147 percent design capacity. The last prison realignment deadline is June 27, 2013. At that time, state prison populations must be at 137.5 percent design capacity.
