ECHO SUMMIT, Calif. (AP) - State officials are set to conduct this winter's first survey of the Sierra snowpack, which provides about a third of the state's water supply.

The survey by the Department of Water Resources is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday off Highway 50 near Echo Summit. The snowpack is expected to be well above normal for this time of year thanks to a series of early season storms.

The storms have also boosted the state's reservoirs. Lake Oroville in Butte County, the State Water Project's principal storage reservoir, is at 70 percent of capacity, 111 percent of normal for this date.
