The Eagles are about to land at the Junior Olympics. The Five Cities 10 and Under softball team is preparing this week for the Junior Olympic State Championships later this month in San Diego.
It is the first time in three years that the 10U Eagles Gold team is sending a team to San Diego. The team is coached by Jim Pelech and features 10 and 11 year old girls from Five Cities area elementary schools.
The team qualified for the prestigious tournament with a second place finish at a tournament in Clovis. "I really feel that our sportsmanship and how hard we worked in this tournament got us to San Diego. We had great defense and we had great hitting," said catcher Mallory Bradbury.
The team boasts a well-rounded roster and coaches say the kids never give up. "The things that we run by are called the Three E's. They are energy, effort and enthusiasm. And if we bring that to every inning, every pitch, every game we've determined that nobody can beat us," said coach Jim Pelech.
Every player needs to raise $1,500 to cover the costs. So several local fundraisers are scheduled for the coming weeks. They're also looking for any local business sponsorships to help.
