FONTANA, Calif. (AP) - High-powered semiautomatic rifles are being stored at Fontana school campuses under a controversial safety program.

School district police purchased 14 of the Colt 6940 rifles last fall, well before the Connecticut school massacre.

The $1,000 rifles were received last month and are stored in locked safes on campuses.

Superintendent Cali Olsen-Binks says they're only to be used if there's an attack on a campus.

Fontana city Police Chief Rodney Jones tells KCBS-TV (http://cbsloc.al/10szRHE ) that the high-powered weapons are the best message to send to anybody thinking about harming children.

But critics say such guns have no place on campuses and the $14,000 should have been used to restore counseling programs that were eliminated in budget cuts.
