The Santa Barbara Foresters bounced back from their worst loss of the season, a 10-2 loss at home to the Blues, to score a 2-0 shutout win in San Luis Obispo on Wednesday night.
The Foresters, who shared the California Collegiate League title the last two years with the Blues, improved to 8-7 in league action and 15-7 overall. The 5th ranked Blues fell to 10-5 in CCL play and 22-6 for the season. They lead SB by two games now in the CCL North Division and hold a 1.5 game edge over second place Conejo.
The Blues out-hit the Foresters 6-2, but could not get the clutch hits when they needed them. Cal Poly's Jimmy Allen went 3 for 4 for the Blues, while Aaron Attaway went 2 for 4 for SLO.
The Foresters broke a 0-0 tie in the fourth inning when Shane Hoelscher hit a sacrifice fly to score Garrett Mattlage, who walked to lead off the inning. UCSB's Joey Epperson made it a 2-0 game with a double to the wall in the fifth to plate Colt Atwood, who had drawn a 2 out walk.
Both SB runs were charged to Western Carolina product Jordan Smith, who went 5 innings, allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. Left-hander Tyler King threw 4 shutout innings the rest of the way.
Texas pitcher Parker French started and threw 4 shutout innings for the Foresters. He allowed just 3 hits and struck out 4. The Foresters used four relievers the rest of the way, who struck out 8 combined. Blake Fox out of Rice and Missouri hurler Jace James each threw a shutout inning with 1 strikeout each. Patrick Weigel struck out 4 in 2 innings, while Hunter Lemke, a Texas State senior, fanned 2 in the ninth to earn his second save. Overall, the five Forester pitchers combined to strike out 12 hitters.
San Luis Obispo returns to action on Thursday at 6pm when the Santa Paula Halos come to town.
