Former Cuesta College and current Pepperdine University basketball player Malte Kramer has been selected as the 2012 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. Kramer and female winner Kelly Huey of Slyline College, were selected out of a field of 27,000 student-athletes from 109 colleges.
The CCCAA Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest student achievement honor awarded annually by the Commission on Athletics (COA). The winners, along with the rest of the annual honor roll, are selected by the COA Awards Committee from nominations made by community colleges throughout California. Candidates for the CCCAA Scholar-Athlete Award must carry a minimum GPA of 3.5 and must also show outstanding leadership as an athlete, student, or in other college and community activities, as well as have participated in two seasons of sport at a California community college.
Kramer is the third Cuesta College student-athelte to win the award, joining Swimmer Joe Hatke (2000) and Grappler Jeremy Waldram (2003), which ties Cuesta for the most winners in the awards history. Kramer, who was the 2012 Cuesta College Athelte of the Year and Warren Hansen Scholar Athlete of the Year, is also the 16th Cuesta student-athlete to be named to the CCCAA Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll since the award inception in 1984.
English is the German-born Small Forward Malte Kramer's fourth language, but it did not keep him from surpassing his homegrown peers. Kramer, who was also an All State Basketball Star, compiled a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in 60.5 units at Cuesta College. He was a two-time All Western State Conference First Team player and WSC Player of the Year as a sophomore, as well as a two-time All-WSC Academic Team selection. Additionally, both the 2011 and 2012 Cuesta Men's Basketball teams were selected as CCCAA/COA Pepsi Scholar teams of the year. Kramer accepted a scholarship to Pepperdine University and is currently a member of the Waves basketball team.
