Former Cal Poly All-American Asa Jackson kicked off his National Football League career with the Baltimore Ravens this week. The cornerback took part in the Ravens' partial-squad practices on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The team holds its first full-squad practice on Thursday.
The 5-10, 191 pound Jackson was taken in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Ravens back in April. He was the seventh Mustang taken in the first five rounds of the draft and the first since Ramses Barden went to the Giants in 2009.
Jackson is one of three players competing for the #4 spot on the depth chart at cornerback. He is slated at third on the chart at punt returner.
Jackson finished his Cal Poly career with 199 tackles, 8 interceptions and 32 pass breakups. He earned Third-Team All-American honors his senior season. He owns the school's Division I record with 3 interception returns for touchdowns. His 14.7 career punt return average is also the all-time school mark.
Jackson is the only defensive player named to the All-Great West Conference First Team for four-straight years.
Santa Barbara native and former Cal Poly offensive lineman Scott Winnewisser is a rookie in the New Orleans Saints training camp this summer. Former Mustang Chris Gocong is a linebacker for the Cleveland Browns, while Barden is about to begin his fourth season with the New York Giants.
