Former Cal Poly baseball star Brent Morel receives his first call up to the Major Leagues.
The White Sox have promoted the third baseman/shortstop from their Triple-A Charlotte team.
Morel, 23, was batting .320 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs in 81 games with the Knights. Overall, he's batting .322 with 10 home runs and 64 RBIs with Double-A Birmingham and Charlotte this season.
The former Mustang was a third round draft pick in the 2008 First Year Player Draft. As a junior, Brent hit .386 with 8 home runs and a Big West leading 60 RBI and 140 total bases.
The White Sox are fighting to catch up with first place Minnesota in the American League Central Division. Their next game is against the Boston Red Sox on Friday.
Once Morel plays in a game for the White Sox, he will become the first former Mustang to make his MLB debut since pitcher Casey Fien debuted last year for the Tigers. The last four former Mustangs to receive big league call ups were all pitchers (Fien, Bud Norris, Garret Olson, Kevin Correia). The last position player from Cal Poly to make his big league debut was catcher John Orton in 1989.
