Former Cal Poly star Ben Bruce finished fifth in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase final to end his run at a spot on his first U.S. Olympic Team at the Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon on Thursday.
The 29 year old finished in 8:29.61. He finished 7.44 seconds behind Kyle Alcorn, who finished third to capture the third and final spot on Team USA.
Evan Jager finished first in 8:17.40, while Donald Cabral came in second at 8:19.81.
Bruce, a former Big West Conference champion with the Mustangs, finished 12th in the final at the 2008 Trials.
Bruce has the No. 2 all-time Cal Poly steeplechase time of 8:33.70, set in 2005, as well as the school record in the 5,000 at 13:40.9. Both marks are Big West Conference records and Bruce was the Big West champion in both the steeplechase and 5,000 in 2005.
