Former Cal Poly golfer Geoff Gonzalez advanced to the second round of the PGA Q School on Friday. The former Mustang shot a 1-under par 71 in the fourth and final round at the Classic Club in Palm Desert.

Gonzalez finished at -5 overall for the tournament to tie for 16th place. The top 18 qualified for next month's second qualifying stage.

The Q School is an annual series of qualifying tournaments where players try to earn PGA Tour cards, which allow them to play in PGA Tournaments without having to qualify for them.

Gonzalez made Cal Poly history in May when he became the first golfer in program history to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships.
