Former Mustang Vessey falls .04 of a second shy of qualifying for finals

Former Cal Poly All-American Maggie Vessey fell .04 of a second shy of advancing to the finals in the women's 800 meter run on Friday night at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Vessey, who won her preliminary round heat on Thursday, led the chase group into the final straight away. London Olympian Alysia Montano won the heat in 2:00.14. Ajee Wilson finished second and Kate Grace finished in third. Vessey was edged at the finish line by fourth place finisher Amy Weissenbach, who was clocked in 2:00.98. Vessey came in fifth place with a time of 2:01.02. Only the top four finishers in the heat advanced to Sunday's final.

Vessey was the runner-up at the 2011 Championships behind Montano.
