Cal Poly graduate Maggie Vessey advanced to the women's 800 semifinals on Thursday by winning her preliminary heat at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Vessey won with a time of 2:03.15 to automatically advance.
The 31 year old is trying to bounce back from a disappointing performance at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials when she failed to make the team. Back in December, Vessey also accepted a public warning and loss of results for testing positive for canrenone. She admitted to taking a skincare product, but was not aware that it contained a diuretic.
Vessey is a two-time runner-up at the USA Outdoor Championships.
The women's 800 semifinals are set for 6:08 pm California time on Friday and air on ESPN2. The 800 final is at 1:04 pm on Sunday and airs on KSBY.
The top three finishers in the final will represent the United States at the World Championships in Russia in August.
Vessey finished 7th in the 2009 World Championships and 6th in 2011.
