Family, friends, and colleagues paid their final respects to Former Santa Maria Police Chief John Sterling during a memorial service in Lompoc.

Sterling, 60, passed away three weeks ago after suffering from liver complications. The Lompoc native was police chief from 1999-2003. Friends and co-workers say Sterling focused on community policing and open communication with residents.

Sterling retired from his position as police chief after the city council suspended him. An agreement with the city states he retired because of a conflict in management styles with the city.
