A former Santa Maria Police Explorer who was allegedly involved in a sexual relationship with Officer Albert Covarrubias Jr. has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Santa Maria, claiming the city police department failed to protect her.
Covarrubias was killed by a fellow officer in January when police said Covarrubias fired his gun as two supervisors tried to arrest him while he was working at a DUI checkpoint in the city.
The teenager is referred to as "Jane Doe" in the 19-page lawsuit filed on Tuesday.
