Former Cal Poly middle distance runner Maggie Vessey advanced to the finals of the women's 800-meter run at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. The trials are taking place at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene. Vessey placed third in the second of two heats of the semifinals with a time of 2:01.01. The top three finishers in each of the two heats plus the next two fastest times advanced to Monday's final.
In the men's 800m, Lompoc native Duane Solomon had the second best qualifying time in the semifinals. Solomon crossed in 1:46.03, .20 seconds off Khadevis Robinson's top mark. Recent UCSB graduate Ryan Martin was the eighth and final runner to qualify for the 800m finals. Martin had the 11th fastest time of 1:47.37 in the semifinals but because he finished third in his heat, he automatically qualified.
Cal Poly graduate Aris Borjas finished ninth in the men's javelin throw to qualify for Monday's final in that event. The top 12 finishers advanced to the finals. Borjas' top throw was 73.66 meters, Timothy Glover had the best throw of day at 80.27.
