Four Nipomo High football players have been picked for the third annual FCA All-Star Football Classic. The selected Titans were unveiled by KSBY on Tuesday.
The Titans will be represented by quarterback Luke Shurtleff, lineman Roman Flores, running back Tommy Saenz and linebacker Clayton Freitas. They will play for San Luis Obispo County and try to deliver the first loss to Northern Santa Barbara County, which won in 2011 and 2012.
"I was excited to play with all the great players from Paso down to us. And there's a lot of great teams. We've got a lot of talent this year. They better watch out, "said Shurtleff. He earned Second Team All-Pac 7 League honors after he completed 55 percent of his passes for 1,739 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also rushed for 116 yards and 1 TD.
Saenz was also a Second Team All-League pick after he led the Los Padres League with 1,386 yards on 207 carries and 8 touchdowns. He averaged 6.7 yards per carry and also caught 38 passes for 312 yards and 2 TDs. "I was pretty excited. It just gives me another chance in high school to show them what I've got," said Saenz when asked about what playing in the All-Star Game meant to him.
Freitas was named to the All-League Second Team Defense after he tallied 74 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 4 tackles for lost yardage.
Flores recorded 48 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 1 sack for the Titans on the defensive line.
The announcement was made at Arroyo Grande Community Hospital because Dignity Health of the Central Coast is a major sponsor of the game. "Youth are our future. They have energy. They are going to be our tomorrow, so it's a thing that we give back to the community with," said Ken Dalebout, the hospital's Chief Operating Officer.
The game is set for Saturday, June 1 at Lompoc High School. Game and raffle ticket sales are on sale at the fifteen participating schools. In the two previous years, the event has raised more than $280,000 for the schools' athletic departments.
KSBY will announce more players every Tuesday leading up to the game.
