Fourth case of meningococcal disease confirmed at UCSB

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department says a fourth UC Santa Barbara student has been diagnosed with meningococcal disease. Health officials say the four students all became sick within a three-week time period in November. One case has resulted in a permanent disability. Health officials say several steps are being taken to minimize the spread of the disease. More than 500 students who were identified as being in close contact with the ill students have received preventive antibiotics. All students, staff and faculty at UCSB have received information on meningococcal disease. Health officials are also consulting with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and providing information about the outbreak to healthcare providers across the state.
