French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo announced plans for a major expansion project.
The upgrades for the 40-year-old facility include a 12-bed cardiac day stay suite, a new intensive care unit, new patient care units with 21 additional beds, a remodel of the emergency department to include a new stroke center and a medical technology center with state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic systems.
Hospital administrators said in the last five years, FHMC experienced a 34% increase in admits, a 28% increase in average daily census, and a 19% increase in ER visits, which are, in part, the reasons for the expansion.
"A major transformation is critically needed to support state-of-the-art health care delivery, as well as prepare for future innovations in medicine and technology," said French Hospital Medical Center's President and CEO Alan Iftiniuk.
The project is expected to cost $39 million and to be completed by 2014.
