SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - After scoring two goals during a 3-2 double-overtime win at Hawai'i on Sunday night, Cal Poly freshman forward Megan Abutin was named the Big West Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Following back-to-back headers strung together by Elise Krieghoff and Kendra Bonsall on a Haley Walker corner kick, Abutin tallied first in the 34th minute, from about five feet in front of the left post, pivoting and flicking a left-footed shot over the reach of the goalkeeper. Abutin then put the Mustangs up 2-0 by heading a Kacey Held cross into the lower-right corner in the 47th minute.
They were the second and third scores of the season for Abutin, from Mt. Carmel High in San Diego. Abutin also accounted for a shot on goal in a 1-0 win at Cal State Northridge on Thursday night, finishing an efficient week with a perfect shot-on-goal percentage.
With the victories, Cal Poly (3-1-0 Big West Conference, 7-7-0 overall) remained in a first-place tie (via nine points) atop the Big West standings, along with UC Irvine and UC Riverside. The top four teams will advance to the Big West Tournament, which will be held Nov. 7-10 at Cal State Fullerton, where an automatic NCAA Tournament berth will be on the line.
The Mustangs, now 7-0-0 this season when scoring first, will return home to face Cal State Fullerton (1-1-1, 6-4-4) at 7 p.m. Friday in Alex G. Spanos Stadium before hosting Senior Day versus UC Riverside (3-1-0, 6-8-1) at noon Sunday.
