You've heard of fried twinkies, fried candy bars... even fried butter. So what's next? At the Texas State Fair later this month, fried bubble gum will make its debut. But right now, it's in a competition for the best tasting and most creative fried food.
Last year, it was all about fried beer at the Texas State Fair. The year before that, it was fried butter. But this year, Justin Martinez is going pink... Bubble gum pink.
"It almost has that blow up effect where it almost looks like someone's blowing a bubble," said Justin Martinez, the creator of fried bubble gum.
Justin says the idea came from one of his employees. This year, he's hoping the creation wins top honors at the "Big Tex Choice Awards." The winner is dubbed as having the best tasting, and most creative fried food at the fair.
Here's how Justin's creation is made. He takes marshmallows and infuses them with bubble gum extract. That's where it gets the gum flavor. After that, the marshmallow goes into some pink batter, then to the fryer. "We give it a little bit of blue icing on top and then those chicklets to give it some color, it gives it a nice appeal," he said.
But Justin has some stiff competition at this year's fair. How would you like to try some fried salsa?
Isaac Rousso is the man behind that treat. He thinks it's good enough to win. "Just think about if you were to have some nice warm salsa with the cheese in the middle and a crunchy crust on the outside, and you get to dip it in some sauce that's what you get," Isaac said.
But in the end, it'll all be up to the judges. They'll choose the best tasting and most creative fried foods this week. The Texas State Fair runs September 30th through October 23rd.
