PRETORIA (AP) - A neighbor and friend of Oscar Pistorius has testified that the athlete was "torn apart" and that he was desperately trying to save Reeva Steenkamp in the minutes after he fatally shot her at his home last year.
Johan Stander says Pistorius was "really crying" and was "in pain."
The testimony came as the trial of the double-amputee Olympian resumed in South Africa following a two-week recess. Defense lawyers are trying to describe a scene of desperate panic by Pistorius after the shooting -- which they say was an accident. They say he shot her through a toilet door after thinking she was a dangerous intruder. Prosecutors say he shot her deliberately after an argument.
At one point during today's testimony, Pistorius slumped forward with his head in his hands, as details of what may have been Steenkamp's last moments were discussed.
