FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - A convicted rapist Fresno County authorities say fled to Mexico has been captured and his father - a California Highway Patrol assistant chief - has been arrested for allegedly helping in the escape.
The Fresno Bee reports (http://bit.ly/ZkLlSc ) that 20-year-old Spencer Scarber was arrested by Mexican authorities in Acapulco on Thursday on suspicion of possessing false identification and using a false name.
The newspaper says Scarber has been wanted since fleeing Fresno County in mid-December, three days before he was convicted in absentia on rape, robbery and burglary charges.
Scarber was returned to Fresno County Saturday.
His father - 49-year-old Kyle Scarber, as well as his mother - 51-year-old Gail Scarber and his sister - 33-year-old Crystal Reynoso - were arrested Saturday on suspicion of felony conspiracy to help a fugitive escape.
Kyle Scarber is an assistant chief with the CHP's Central Division.
