FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) - A police officer in Orange County has been shot multiple times after he pulled over a car on a routine traffic stop.

The Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/WtfoWb ) reports that the shooting occurred shortly after 12 a.m. Sunday in Fullerton when the officer approached the driver's side window.

The officer, who is a seven-year veteran of the department, returned fire, but the vehicle fled the scene and was later found abandoned.

The officer was taken to a local hospital. He is expected to survive.

It is unknown whether either of the two people in the car was wounded.
