Gang member arrested after attempted murder in Monterey County

CASTROVILLE, Calif. (AP) - A Nortenos gang member is under
arrest for attempted murder after several shots were fired at a man climbing the stairs to his apartment on New Year's Eve.

Monterey County Sheriff's deputies say they arrested 19-year-old Rogelio Garcia of Castroville in the incident.

No one was struck by the bullets.

The sheriff's office says Garcia is a documented and
self-admitted member of the Nortenos gang.

Gang wars in Monterey County led to a record number of homicides in Salinas in 2009, with 29. Most other cities in Monterey County also saw their homicide rates increase because of gang shootings, at a time when major cities across the country are seeing their homicide rates decline.
