The San Luis Obispo City Council voted four to one on Tuesday night to approve an increase in garbage rates.

The 3.4 percent increase will take effect on February 1.

It will cover increased costs for fuel, tires, labor, and insurance related to the garbage company's operations. The city says another factor behind the increase is the loss of revenue from customers downsizing.
