Santa Maria City firefighters are on scene mopping up after a garbage truck fire that has closed down Knudsen Way, between Oakley Avenue and Western Avenue Thursday morning.
The recycling truck's driver said he smelt smoke coming from the bed of the truck but after looking he didn't see a fire. He got back into the truck and realized there was a fire burning in the trash. He then proceeded to empty the load in the middle of the street. Neighbors came out to help put out the fire but were unsuccessful. That's when Santa Maria Fire Crews arrived and were able to quickly knock out the fire. Crews say the driver did the right thing in dumping out his load in the street because if he had not acted so quickly the fire would have spread through out the truck.
Fire officials say Knudsen Way will be closed for about an hour while they clean up.
