The UC Santa Barbara women battled, but fell short in a 54-51 home loss to first place Hawaii on Thursday night.
UCSB dropped its second in a row in the Thunderdome and fell to 7-6 in Big West play and 11-14 overall. Hawaii stayed tied for first place with Pacific at 10-4 in conference.
UCSB led 26-22 at the half behind 8 points from Sweets Underwood and 7 from Nicole Nesbitt. The Gauchos forced 9 turnovers in the first half.
Hawaii charged ahead in the second half by outscoring the Gauchos 19-10 in the first ten minutes to take a 43-36 lead with 10:02 to play. UCSB tied it 45-45 with 5:19 to go on two free throws by Kirsta Tilleman. Hawaii regained the lead from there and never relinquished it. UCBS got to within one 51-50 when Destini Mason hit a bucket with 2:08 to play.
Underwood led the Gauchos with 16 points, while Nesbitt finished with 16.
Kamilah Martin led three Hawaii players in double figures with 14 points to go with 8 rebounds.
UCSB hosts Cal State Northridge at 2pm on Saturday. The Gauchos are just 3-8 at home and have lost 3 of their last 4 home contests.
