Gay marriage ban supporter named SF archbishop

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A vigorous supporter of California's same-sex marriage ban has been named as the next Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco.
The Vatican announced Friday that Pope Benedict XVI selected the Rev. Salvatore Cordileone (KOR'-de-lee-oh-nay), the presiding bishop of Oakland, to replace Archbishop George Niederauer in October.
The 56-year-old priest is chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage.
As an auxiliary bishop in San Diego four years ago, Cordileone was instrumental in raising Catholic dollars to put an initiative on the California ballot that stripped same-sex couples of the right to wed in the state.
He also was part of a statewide network of pastors that promoted the measure, known as Proposition 8. Campaign finance records show he personally gave at least $6,000 to back the voter-approved ban.
