More than two million Californians out of work is making the job market a competitive field.
We continue our 'Getting Hired' series with a look at how to land a job at the largest private employer in the city of San Luis Obispo: Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.
It employs nearly 800 people and hires about 150 new ones every year.
Currently, positions such as admitting representatives and ward clerks, which pay $15 an hour to occupational or physical therapists, which pay more than $30 an hour, are available at the hospital.
If you think you have what it takes to be the hospital's next new hire, we have some tips from the woman who screens all resumes to give you an edge up on the competition.
Just recently, one job posting received more than 250 resumes. "We don't have a lot of staff to go through all of these so we're going to be looking at the ones that stand out, that are clear concise and accurate," said Chief Human Resources Officer Betty Baker.
She is offering up some tips to assure your resume does not end up in the trash.
Starting with your resume: Baker said not to use fancy fonts, have a second pair of eyes check for mistakes and always spell check.
" If you want yours to rise to the top, make sure you spell check. That's just the number one. It's an easy fix, just spell check it," said Baker.
The next step is applying.
Baker said if you want to be taken seriously, only apply for the jobs for which you are qualified, " If it's a job for CEO and your only experience is receptionist, you're probably not going to meet the minimum qualifications and you're not going to want to apply for that one."
And lastly, the interview.
You have likely heard this one before, but it bears repeating: dress for success.
" When you come to an interview, don't come dressed like something you'd wear to the beach, to the prom, to bed, or clubbing," said Baker.
Lorene Campbell was recently hired as the hospital's employee health manager.
It had been more than 20 years since she had to look for a job and she quickly found things have changed.
Applying on line was new to her and the resume format changed, somewhat.
" Before it seemed like you put everything on one piece of paper, I worked at the facility, I worked at the facility, I worked at the facility. Now, I think they want to know more, and maybe they did before, about what you did at that facility to help the bottom line or to help that facility," said Campbell.
She went online to prepare herself for questions that might be asked of her.
"They ask questions like, 'what are your strengths and what are your weaknesses,' and if you're going to tell them about a weakness you also need to tell them what you're doing to help overcome that weakness," said Campbell.
She also applied for more than one job, for a couple of reasons.
" One, because you can get a philosophy of the different areas that you're going for; and two, for you to get a little experience with interviewing," said Campbell.
It has been said, luck is when preparation meets opportunity; now, Campbell completes physicals for fellow, lucky new hires.
Most jobs at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center require a license or a certification of some sort and at some type of medical background.
