Hannah Gilbert was a dominant force inside for the Pirates as the Morro Bay High girls basketball team controlled the tempo in a 58-26 win over rival Templeton in a key Los Padres League battle of unbeatens on Wednesday.
Morro Bay improved to 4-0 in league and 10-3 overall. The Pirates, who are the two-time defending LPL champions, have won 19-straight league games. Templeton dropped to 2-1 in league and 12-3 for the season. The Eagles dropped their thirteenth-straight meeting with the Pirates, a streak that included Templeton's only two league losses last season.
Gilbert, who's headed to Cal Poly, scored ten points during a 14-2 Morro Bay run in the first quarter that turned a 5-2 Templeton lead into a 16-7 Pirate advantage. Gilbert finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Sierra Schwellenbach dished out 7 assists and racked up 7 steals, while Carli Watt just missed a double-double of her own with10 points and 8 rebounds.
Megan Hattar led the Eagles with 9 points. She hit a three-pointer early in the game that gave Templeton a 5-2 lead, its largest advantage of the game.
