Hannah Gilbert and Sierra Schwellenbach led the Morro Bay High girls basketball team to a season-opening 51-18 win at San Luis Obispo High on Tuesday night.
The Pirates, who are coming off a 20-4 season and second-straight Los Padres League title, improved to 1-0 on the season. The Tigers, under second year head coach Dan Monroe, dropped to 0-1.
The Tigers stayed close in the first quarter and trailed 7-4 after the first eight minutes. Gilbert, who signed a national letter of intent to continue her career at Cal Poly earlier this month, took over the game in the second quarter. She scored eight of her ten first half points in the quarter, while Schwellenbach recorded several steals and poured in 5 points to help the Pirates take a 25-9 lead into halftime.
Gilbert finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Pirates, while Schwellenbach had 19 points and 7 steals.
