SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Toll takers collecting cash from drivers is set to become a thing of the past at the Golden Gate Bridge.

The iconic span is expected to become the first in California to switch to all-electronic toll collection in March. Drivers will be able to pay using FasTrak transponders as well as a new system that will scan license plates at the toll plaza. Bridge officials began testing that system on Wednesday.

The license plates will be connected to pre-paid accounts or one-time payments made at kiosks or online. Motorists who fail to set either of those up will get an invoice in the mail.

Bridge officials say eliminating toll takers will save about $19 million in salaries and benefits over eight years.
