Only 32 people have jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge and survived. Today one of them was at the New Life Church in Pismo Beach telling his story.
Kevin Hines jumped from the bridge in 2000 and survived the fall. He says he jumped to put a stop to the voices in his head. Now he tours the country speaking out on suicide prevention and mental health.
"It wasn't as much as deciding that I wanted to as it kind of happened organically." he told KSBY, "After I survived, and got well, a priest at my grammar school said 'Will you come talk to the school and tell us your story?' And I said 'No, I don't want to' and my father took his oven-mitt-sized hands and shoved me forward and said 'He'll do it.'"
Hines told KSBY that becoming a motivational speaker helped him to recover and helped others who were considering suicide to get help.
After Hines spoke a panel discussion was held where he and his father answered questions, followed by a screening of the documentary "SLOtheStigma". The event was put on by Transitions-Mental Health Association and the Central Coast Psychological Association.
