Five years ago Sunday, Jennifer San Marco killed six people inside the Goleta postal service and distribution facility, before turning the gun on herself.

The incident on January 30, 2006 was the deadliest post office shooting in the U.S. in 20 years. San Marco worked at the facility for six years as coworkers said she had a history of bizarre behavior.

Around 100 employees were working the night she stormed the building and witnesses described complete chaos. Even responding officers and deputies did not know who or where the shooter was for some time.

The following day on January 31 officers made another grim discovery. San Marco had also murdered her former neighbor. Since the mass murder, six olive trees were planted at the facility to honor the victims. The post office also installed security fences and an electronic entry system.
