A local hospital in the process of rebuilding just got a boost to help move things along.
Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital is building a $114 million facility to meet the state's requirements to withstand a major earthquake and to make room for new technology.
A local family with deep roots in Santa Barbara County just pitched in $2 million to help. Santa Barbara-based Cavalletto Charities makes annual donations to Cottage Health Systems and Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital.
George and Dale Cavalletto made it part of their estate plan to create Cavalletto Charities in 2003. The Cavalletto family history started in Santa Barbara back in 1892, when Giovanni Battista Cavalletto emigrated from Italy at the age of 16. Giovanni's son, George, was a pioneering Goleta farmer, businessman and attorney, according to the hospital. In 1987, Cavalletto developed a medical office building across from the hospital, and he was recognized as an honorary founder.
When the new Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital is complete in 2014, the main lobby will be dedicated to the memory of George and his wife, Dale.
