I just read a series of comments made by various dog trainers who had seen the movie Marley and Me. Some trainers felt this dog needed some basic obedience lessons and practical guidance. Some felt the dog suffered from "Separation Anxiety" and required medication.
Only one trainer felt that Marley's behavior could be viewed as perfectly fine for both Marley and his owners. This particular trainer indicated that he has two dogs that are almost perfect in their behavior and obey every command they hear. He has two other dogs that ignore him most of the time. He loves them all and recognizes that they all live up to the expectations he gave them as puppies.
We all need to realize that each person has different expectations for their pets' behavior. Most of us would like our pets to avoid destroying our personal belongings - but this is not important to everyone.
I had a client who had two little dogs that preferred to urinate and defecate on a beach towel left in front of the TV each day - she would come home after work and change the towel. When I offered to help her to correct this behavior by teaching them to use a doggie door, she was completely uninterested. She saw no problem with the behavior.
There is no need for you to work to correct your pet's behaviors if they do not bother you or other people your pet contacts.
If you decide you want to change or prevent a certain behavior in your pet, call us. We are open M-F 7:30-6, Sat 9-3 and Mondays until 8pm.
