Our first Good Question is about speed limits in the city of Santa Maria. Marc of Santa Maria asks: are the speed limits on Santa Maria roads higher than in other cities? Good Question.

Santa Maria follows the same state protocols as every city. The basic rule is that the speed can't be faster than 55 and no faster than is safe for road conditions. A study is done on each road tracking how fast people drive. The speed at which 85 percent of people drive becomes the benchmark. The city engineer can then lower the speed in special places, like where there's a lot of pedestrians. If the city council lowers a speed limit on it's own, it cannot be enforced with radar.

Marcia Mcclish of Orcutt wants to know: what's being done with the building at the Santa Maria Mall that used to be Gottschalks?

Town Center Management has run the mall for three years but is continuing a long-range plan that's been in place since 2005. That plan is to fill the building with a 14-screen movie theater complex with stadium seating and state of the art technology. The management company hopes a theater company will provide funding once the economy turns around.

I know you have a lot more questions so send them to goodquestion@ksby.com or, better yet, friend me at facebook.com/JohnRegerKsbyNews. The only bad question is the one you don't ask.
