We're a week and a half after Labor Day, but we still have lots of warm weather. That brings up an age old question. Joseph Matthew Logan from San Luis Obispo wants to know: What's the rule on wearing white after labor day? And how did it start? Good Question.

The tradition dates back to the early 1900's when wealthy city dwellers, especially on the East Coast, would spend their summers outside the city and wear light, white fabrics to stay cool. After Labor Day they'd return home and pack away what they considered their "resort wear." The trend persisted into the 1950's as the growing middle class copied the fashions of the upwardly mobile.

Things loosened up in the counter-culture '60's and nowadays the fashion magazines are all over the place, mostly saying wear whatever you want after the first week of september but perhaps keep away from white in light fabrics, like linen or slinky cotton.

The trends now include pairing white with darker colors so the entire outfit isn't white; wear what's called winter-white, which is an off-white or cream; and accessorize a darker outfit with a winter-white bag, gloves, or belt.

There are your good question fashion tips. If you've got something you want answered, send it to goodquestion@ksby.com or friend me on facebook. The only bad question is the one you don't ask.
