With so many joggers and walkers on the Central Coast, it's no surprise tonight's Good Question comes from someone who's wondering why a sidewalk has been closed for a long time.
D.B. from San Luis Obispo asks: Why is a section of sidewalk along Pismo Street near downtown SLO blocked off? Good Question.
The sidewalk in question is on Pismo between Pismo and Morro. The adjoining parking lane is also closed. The city says the problem is the rock hidden behind vegetation on a steep hillside above the sidewalk. Large chunks could come loose and crash down on the sidewalk, so it's been closed to prevent injuries to pedestrians or damage to parked cars.
The city has been in conversation with the property owner to find a solution but it's an expensive undertaking. You can't just yank out the rocks without stabilizing the entire steep hillside. And there's an apartment complex on the top of the hill.
There's no plan in place at this time so no timetable for removing the barrier.
