Graffiti is on the rise in Santa Maria. But what may surprise you is that it's not due to gang activity.

According to Santa Maria's Recreation and Parks department, groups known as "crews" are more to blame for the rise in graffiti. Crews usually aren't connected to violent crime and write graffiti purely for the fame or notoriety.

Dennis Smitherman, Recreation Supervisor, said, "What's frustrating is these crews and gang members are finding different places that are making it more and more difficult for our staff to reach and clean up the paint. "

KSBY News Reporter Monica Quintero will have more on this story tonight on KSBY News at 6pm .
