Grapefruit may interact with certain drugs

Eating grapefruit can be dangerous for people taking certain prescription medications, but many doctors are unaware of the risks.
Canadian researchers say there are now 85 drugs that may interact with grapefruit and 43 can have serious side effects, or even cause sudden death.
There is concern that as the number of drugs with these potential risks increase each year, healthcare providers are not familiar with them.
The fruit contains a chemical that can either accelerate the effects of certain drugs or block the absorption of others, even when eaten many hours before taking the medication.
Researchers say grapefruit poses risks to those taking commonly prescribed drugs like Lipitor, Zocor, Plavix, and Oxycodone.
